Tanja Temmerman is Assistant Professor (Belgian title: chargée de cours) of Dutch Linguistics at Université Saint-Louis – Bruxelles (Belgium). She also teaches English (Belgian title: maître de langue) and is the head of the English Department at the same university. 

 

Tanja Temmerman (°1985) studied Germanic languages (Dutch and English Linguistics and Literature) at the Catholic University of Brussels (now KU Leuven Campus Brussel) and the Catholic University of Leuven. In 2007, she became a Ph.D. candidate at the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL). She obtained her Ph.D. from Leiden University in 2012 with a dissertation entitled Multidominance, ellipsis, and quantifier scope, which investigates the scopal behavior of negative indefinites, modals, and quantified phrases in ellipsis. In 2009 and 2010, she was lecturer in the English department at Leiden University. From September 2010 to September 2011, she was employed as research assistant at CRISSP at HUBrussel and as teaching assistant of Dutch Linguistics at the Facultés Universitaires Saint-Louis (FUSL). From August 2012 to July 2016, she was a postdoctoral researcher at KU Leuven on the FWO/NWO-sponsored project `The syntax of idioms’ awarded to Prof.dr. Jeroen van Craenenbroeck (KU Leuven) and Prof.dr. Norbert Corver (Utrecht University). Since September 2012, she is Assistant Professor (Belgian title: chargée de cours) of Dutch Linguistics at Université Saint-Louis – Bruxelles. Since September 2014, she also teaches language courses (first Dutch, then English) at the same university. She became the head of the English Department in October 2017. She is also a Research Fellow at the Center for Research in Syntax, Semantics, and Phonology (CRISSP) at KU Leuven. Since September 2019, she co-teaches the MA course Nederlandse Taalkunde – Syntaxis at KU Leuven with Prof.dr. Jeroen van Craenenbroeck. 

 

Her principal research foci lie in (generative) syntax, issues at the syntax-phonology and syntax-semantics interfaces, Dutch dialectology and comparative Germanic syntax. Specific topics of interest include ellipsis, the internal and external syntax of idioms, phase theory, long distance dependencies, island effects, phrase structure, modals, and negation. She is co-editor of the Oxford Handbook of Ellipsis.
